Ather Delays the Entry-Level Konarc, Prioritises Mid-Range Variants to Protect Margins

Ather Energy is making a deliberate trade-off with its upcoming Konarc platform, and it's choosing margins over an early entry-level push.

On the Q2 FY27 analyst call on 26 October, Ather CEO Tarun Mehta said the company has delayed the entry-level Konarc model and will roll out the platform in phases, starting with mid-range variants in states such as Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan, to protect margins. Autocar Professional first reported the call.

Why skip the cheap model first?

This is a notable strategic call, for a couple of reasons:

  • Entry-level EVs typically carry the thinnest margins. They're priced to win volume and market share, not profit. Launching the mid-range version first means Ather gets to establish Konarc in the market at better unit economics before it eventually competes at the budget end.
  • It also suggests Ather doesn't feel it needs an aggressive price-led push right now to defend its position. That's a reasonable read, given the company is simultaneously saying (see our story on Ather's capacity gap) that it's turning away 18,000-20,000 potential buyers a month due to capacity constraints. If demand is already outstripping supply at current price points, there's less urgency to rush out a cheaper variant purely to chase volume.

What this tells us about Ather's playbook

Taken together with its capacity comments, this looks like a company managing growth deliberately rather than chasing every possible sale. Ather appears to be choosing sustainable, margin-healthy growth over maximum volume at any cost, a stance that will please investors watching its path to profitability, even if it means budget-conscious buyers will have to wait longer for a cheaper Konarc variant.

It's also a reminder that "entry-level EV" announcements don't always mean an imminent launch. Pricing strategy and margin protection can push even a planned budget model further down the roadmap.
