(Note: These are early numbers as of 1 October. Final figures can change slightly when the full data comes in.)

- The previous best month was June 2026, when about 33,300 cars were sold, according to Autocar India. September has beaten that by more than 2,600 cars.
- Now 8.45% of all new cars sold in India are electric. A year ago it was 5.76%. That means roughly one in twelve new cars is now electric.

Rank changes since August: VinFast moved up from 5th to 4th, Kia jumped from 8th to 5th, Maruti Suzuki slipped from 4th to 6th, and Tesla entered the top 10 for the first time in this list.
Tata is still the king
Tata Motors sold 14,721 electric cars. That is more than 40% of the whole market. Even with 14,000-plus cars, Tata grew another 6.6% over August.
To understand how big the gap is, look at number two. Mahindra sold 7,743 cars. Tata sold almost twice as many.
Tata also has the widest range of electric cars in the country, from the small Tiago EV to the Nexon EV, Punch EV and Curvv EV. Recent reports from Autocar India also credit the new Sierra EV for the company's good run this year.
Mahindra is the strong number two
Mahindra & Mahindra sold 7,743 cars with a 13.5% growth over August. Its share is 21.5%.
Together, Tata and Mahindra sold 22,464 cars. That is 62.5% of every electric car sold in India in September. Two Indian companies are leading the whole market, which is something to be proud of.
The BE 6 and XEV 9e have been the big reasons behind Mahindra's growth this year.
MG holds third place
MG Motor India sold 5,226 cars, up 6.1%, and kept the third rank with a 14.5% share. The Windsor has been MG's key volume car.
Top three together (Tata, Mahindra, MG) account for 77% of all electric cars sold. So the remaining brands are fighting for the rest 23%.
VinFast keeps growing
VinFast is the story to watch. The Vietnamese company sold 2,961 cars, up 32% from August, and moved up to fourth place. It has also gone past Maruti Suzuki and Kia in these numbers.
This brand only came to India recently, and it is already selling close to 3,000 cars a month. That is a good start.
Kia, BYD and BMW had a great month
- Kia sold 1,255 cars, up 47.6% over August. It climbed from 8th place to 5th.
- BYD sold 831 cars, up 46.6%.
- BMW sold 501 cars, up 72.8%.
All three had their sales jump by a big margin in a single month.
Tesla doubles in a month
Tesla India sold 279 cars in September. In August, it was 117. That is more than double (+138.5%), and it brought Tesla into the top 10.
The number is still small if you compare with Tata or Mahindra. But for a premium brand with high prices, every sale counts. Tesla had already crossed 100 cars a month for the first time in July, after it reduced prices, as reported by Autocar India.
Who had a bad month?
Two companies sold less than in August:
- Maruti Suzuki sold 1,095 cars, which is 25.6% lower than August (1,472). It also dropped from 4th to 6th place.
- Hyundai sold 789 cars, down 6.1%.
One month of numbers does not tell the full story. Many things can move monthly sales, like supply, new variants, and the timing of deliveries. So it is better to look at a few months together before drawing a conclusion.
Other brands in the list: Toyota (Kirloskar) sold 218 cars and Mercedes-Benz sold 124.
What this means for buyers
- Many more choices. At least twelve brands sold electric cars in September. You can find an electric car at almost every price level.
- Home brands lead. Tata and Mahindra together sell more than 6 out of 10 electric cars. That also means their service networks are growing fast.
- Sales are no longer a small thing. More than 35,000 electric cars found a buyer in a single month.
