Three electric truck stories landed in one week, and the numbers add up to something real: 100 trucks ordered, 5,000 trucks planned, and a battery swap that takes under 5 minutes. Heavy trucks were supposed to be the last thing India electrified. The segment is starting to move anyway.

Ampstar's first 100 trucks, and a 330 km corridor to build

On 28 October, JSW Greentech's Ampstar brand announced its first commercial order: 100 Ampstar 4x2 55-tonne electric tractor-trucks for JSW Cement, as reported by Autocar Professional. The brand itself was launched on 22 September; this is the first time it has put trucks to work. ARAI has certified the 4x2 and 6x4 tractors under CMVR.

The trucks will haul clinker and slag, about 1.25 lakh tonnes a month, on a 330 km route between Nandyal in Andhra Pradesh and Vijayanagar in Karnataka. JSW Eco-Mobility, a JSW Greentech arm, will run battery-as-a-service and plans 4 swap stations along the route. Note the tense: the corridor is planned, not built yet. The interesting part is that a cement company is both the customer and the infra builder, so nobody is waiting for a third party to put up chargers.

A 5,000-truck deal worth up to ₹150 crore

On 27 October, BikeWo GreenTech signed a partnership with Green Drive Mobility to deploy 5,000 electric trucks, backed by investment of up to ₹150 crore. Deployment deals of this size are rare in India, and the number to watch is how many trucks are actually on the road by mid-2027, not the headline figure.

A sub-5-minute swap near Mumbai

On 26 October, Blue Energy Motors and HPCL opened a battery-swapping station for heavy trucks at Bhiwandi, serving the Mumbai-Pune freight corridor. A swap takes under 5 minutes. For a truck that earns only while moving, that beats an hour on a fast charger every time.

The hurdle is money, not motors

At the Autocar Professional India EV Conclave in New Delhi on 27 October, Olectra Greentech MD Mahesh Babu called electric trucks the next big EV opportunity, and said financing, not technology, is what holds fleets back. The week's news backs him up. The trucks exist, the orders exist, the swap stations are coming. What a mid-sized fleet owner still can't get is a loan on terms that work for a ₹1 crore-plus vehicle.

The EVGyan take

Watch the Nandyal-Vijayanagar route. If 100 trucks can run 330 km on swaps with 4 stations and keep a cement plant fed, that is the template every steel and cement group in India will copy. If the swap stations slip, it tells you where the real bottleneck is.

Correction (31 Oct 2026): An earlier version of this article said JSW Greentech launched the Ampstar brand on 28 October and had built a 330 km battery-swapping corridor. The brand was launched on 22 September; 28 October marked its first 100-truck order, and the 4 swap stations on the 330 km route are planned, not yet built.
