A year ago, Hero MotoCorp showed EICMA a concept sketch of a three-wheeled EV that could lean into corners like a motorcycle. At EICMA 2026 in Milan, that concept came back as a working prototype: the Next 2, built by Hero's in-house innovation hub, Novus Labs.

Hero describes the Next 2 as "a compact, flexible, space-efficient, self-balancing electric trike that combines the thrill and agility of a motorcycle with the stability, safety, and utility of three wheels." Company leadership was clear this is Hero's own ground-up take on the leaning-trike format, not a copy of what's already on sale elsewhere.

From sketch to prototype in one year

The headline number here isn't a spec, it's a timeline. In Hero's own words on the EICMA stage: "From an idea brought to life as a concept, today it is a working prototype already moving into its next phase of development." That's a real milestone. Plenty of concepts shown at motor shows never get built at all, let alone move into a second development phase inside 12 months.

Design-wise, the Next 2 lines up with design patents Hero filed in India earlier this year for a self-balancing electric trike: twin front wheels on a complex suspension setup that lets it lean like a two-wheeler, a belt drive to the rear wheel, disc brakes on both front wheels, a large windscreen and a round digital display. Hero hasn't confirmed battery size, range, top speed, price or a launch date. Novus Labs' own mandate is to build and test ideas before deciding whether they go to Hero, to Vida, or to an entirely new venture.

What this means for you

Don't read "working prototype" as "coming to a showroom soon." Hero was explicit that Novus Labs exists to explore ideas without a guaranteed production outcome; only once something clears that bar does it get a brand and a launch date. But a trike that promises motorcycle-like cornering with the stability of three wheels fills a real gap for riders nervous about balancing a two-wheeler in city traffic, without the bulk of a scooter-style three-wheeler.

The EVGyan take: self-balancing, leaning trikes have stayed a niche idea globally for over a decade. Yamaha's Niken and Piaggio's MP3 line prove there's a market, just not yet a mass one. If Hero gets the Next 2's cost and weight right, it has a genuine shot at becoming India's first mainstream leaning EV trike. For now, it's a prototype worth watching, not a vehicle worth waiting for.
