Honda Alpha: A ₹1,200 Crore Bet on India Building Its EVs

Honda's first electric car for India finally has a name. It is the Alpha, it gets a global debut on 2 December, and it will come off a line in Rajasthan that the state government put at roughly ₹1,200 crore back in March.
The Honda Alpha electric SUV is not a Honda EV that India gets late. It is the other way round. Honda Cars India says no country gets the Alpha before we do, and that India is eventually meant to build it for every other market too. Honda has not sold a single electric car here yet, so it is skipping the import-first route that almost every other brand used.
What is official, and what isn't
Honda announced the name, the debut date and very little else. No price, no battery size, no range, no on-sale date.
Confirmed so far:
- Name: Alpha, after the opening letter of the Greek alphabet
- Global debut: 2 December 2026, in India
- Previewed as the 0 Alpha concept at the Japan Mobility Show in 2025
- First Honda in India to wear the brand's redesigned H badge, replacing the one used since 1963
- Goes on sale in India and Japan in 2027
Autocar India expects two LFP packs somewhere between 65 kWh and 75 kWh, with a single front motor at launch. That is an expectation, not a spec sheet. Toshiyuki Yanagisawa, who runs Honda Cars India, said the Alpha reflects "our ambition to bring advanced electric mobility to our customers in India".
The ₹1,200 crore part is the real story
That figure came in March, when Rajasthan chief minister Bhajanlal Sharma met Honda's leadership and the state announced an EV line at Honda's Tapukara plant. Testing of the car began there the same month.
Here is why it is a big deal. Honda shipped just 473 cars out of India in October, down 88.53% in a year. The company that says India will build the Alpha for the world is, right now, barely exporting from India at all. Maruti Suzuki has already sent more than 50,000 EVs abroad and accounts for about 93% of India's EV exports. Honda is starting from near zero and announcing an export base in the same breath.
What this means for you
Price decides everything here, and Honda has said nothing. If the Alpha lands in the ₹18 lakh to ₹24 lakh band, it runs straight into the Hyundai Creta Electric, which starts at ₹18.03 lakh ex-showroom with 42 kWh and 51.4 kWh packs and a claimed 420 km to 510 km. The Tata Sierra EV is in the same room.
India registered 36,708 electric cars in October, up 75% in a year, and Tata, Mahindra and MG took 28,900 of them between them, or 78.7%. That market needs a fourth serious name. Four weeks to find out whether Honda has brought one.
