India's electric two-wheeler market hit 2.24 lakh registrations in October, up 48.5% YoY — and inside that record, two brands moved in opposite directions. Ola Electric's registrations fell 26.4% to 12,098 units. River's jumped 273.9%, to 6,817, according to Autopunditz's October OEM breakdown of Vahan data.

A five-year-old giant and a three-year-old challenger, crossing paths

Ola Electric was once the brand every other E2W maker was chasing. In October, it registered 12,098 scooters — good for just 5.4% of the market and fifth place, behind TVS (60,494, 27.0% share), Bajaj (49,127, 21.9%), Ather (31,833, 14.2%) and Hero Vida (29,958, 13.4%).

River, the Bengaluru startup backed by Yamaha, registered 6,817 units — seventh place, but the fastest-growing name in the entire top 10. A year ago it managed 1,823. That's not incremental growth; it's a brand finding real demand after years of being a rounding error in these tables.

The real story: the top 6 have locked up 86.7%

Zoom out and the bigger pattern is concentration, not just one brand's rise and another's fall. TVS, Bajaj, Ather, Hero Vida, Ola and Greaves (10,839 units, 4.8% share) together hold 86.7% of October's market. Everyone else — River included, alongside names like BGauss (5,556 units) and a long list of smaller OEMs — is splitting the remaining 13.3%.

That's the frame River's 273.9% growth needs to sit inside. It's the standout performer of the whole long tail, but it's still fighting for scraps of a market the top 6 have largely closed off. Ola, meanwhile, is proof that a brand can fall out of that top tier even after building it.

What this means for you

If you're shopping outside the top 4 brands, River is the one worth test-riding right now — triple-digit growth at this stage usually means a company has found product-market fit, not just discounting its way to volume. For Ola owners and loyalists, the honest read is that five straight months of declining registrations is a trend, not a blip, and it's worth checking current service wait times before buying rather than assuming the brand that once led the category still does.
