VW May Build Up to 75% of Future VW, Skoda and Cupra EVs on Xpeng's Platform

Up to 75% of the next generation of Volkswagen, Skoda and Cupra cars could sit on an architecture VW built with Xpeng for China. That is the claim in a 27 October report by Germany's Manager Magazin, picked up by Reuters and CnEVPost. VW hasn't confirmed it, and the same report says there are doubts inside the company about the idea.
Why the 75% number matters
VW and Xpeng's joint platform was sold as a China-only fix: a way for VW to catch up on software and launch speed in the world's toughest EV market. Using it in Europe would be an admission that the China-developed hardware is simply better value than what Wolfsburg built on its own.
Treat the 75% as a reported figure, not a plan. Platform decisions at VW have a habit of changing, and the internal pushback is already on record.
Xpeng's Mona L05 goes global before it goes on sale in China
On 26 October, Xpeng said (via CnEVPost) that global shipments of the Mona L05 had started, with a target of 65 countries and regions, three days before the car's own China launch on 29 October. The L05 is a 5-seat mid-size SUV, the third model in the budget Mona line and a step above the Mona L03 sedan. China pre-sale prices run from 169,800 to 191,800 yuan (roughly ₹21-24 lakh), across battery-electric and range-extender versions.
Shipping a car abroad before it launches at home is a new move even for Chinese brands. It says Xpeng wants Mona to be a volume play outside China from day one, not a premium-first story.
Why this matters for India
Neither story touches India directly, yet. But the pattern is the same one we keep seeing: Chinese-developed platforms are becoming the base for non-Chinese brands, not just Chinese ones. Which platforms eventually land in India, through joint ventures or licensing, will be decided by deals like the VW-Xpeng one.
Correction (31 Oct 2026): An earlier version of this article described the Mona L05 as the international badge for the China-market Mona M03. The L05 is a new 5-seat mid-size SUV positioned above the Mona L03 sedan. The 75% figure has also been attributed to the Manager Magazin report, which VW has not confirmed.
